The Old Guard 2 Review: Immortality Has a Price – and a Swordfight

Platform: Netflix
Directed by: Victoria Mahoney
Starring: Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Uma Thurman, Henry Golding, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli

⚔️ A More Personal and Visceral Sequel
Following the unexpected triumph of The Old Guard in 2020, its long-awaited sequel is released today on Netflix — and to our relief, The Old Guard 2 delivers. Where the original film defined the emotional burden of immortality, the sequel is brazen enough to wonder: what if that immortality begins to crack?

Victoria Mahoney’s helming introduces a crisper visual tone and a character-centric approach to the series. Stepping in for Gina Prince-Bythewood, Mahoney ratchets up the tension, increases the stakes, and introduces urgency that the original sometimes was missing.

The Stakes Are Higher, The Blade Is Sharper
Charlize Theron reprises her role as Andy (Andromache of Scythia) — but she’s no longer immortal. And that makes all the difference. Andy is more fragile, more human, and more potent than ever. The movie wisely focuses on her mortal vulnerability without sacrificing the big action fans have come to expect.

The story follows the Old Guard crew as they face a new threat: Discord, a centuries-old immortal played masterfully by Uma Thurman. Discord is more than just an antagonist — she’s a dark mirror of Andy’s legacy, and their eventual sword fight is one of the most visceral and cinematic action scenes in recent memory.

New Faces, Stronger Bonds
Henry Golding plays Tuah, the enigmatic character with a better sense of immortality’s curse. He brings some interesting new dynamics with both Andy and Quỳnh. And let’s talk about Quỳnh (Vân Veronica Ngô) — she’s back for more than just revenge; it’s a richly detailed storyline about betrayal, redemption, and existential loss.

Meanwhile, KiKi Layne’s Nile develops further into the emotional heart of the group. Her leadership scenes demonstrate the franchise is breaking the mold for a generation change within the team.

Action That Doesn’t Forget Its Soul
The action is intense, international, and more choreographed than ever before — from ancient ruins in Italy to future labs in London. But what makes The Old Guard 2 truly stand out is that it doesn’t want to be another shoot-’em-up sequel. There’s significance to every battle, regret or revenge to every punch.

Any Flaws?
Yes — just a few. Pacing bumps in the second act come from exposition heavy dialogue, briefly dragging the momentum. Maybe more of deeper mythology is quicker than necessary through montage narration and some characters the actor Henry Golding plays is underdeveloped for a such a crucial role on.

.
The Old Guard 2 is darker, bolder, and more emotionally charged than its first outing. With stunning performances, particularly from Thurman and Theron, and a faster, more streamlined plot, it’s one of 2025’s top action sequels to date.

Whatever you were expecting — the action, the mythology, or the emotional arcs — this sequel doesn’t just meet expectations. It surpasses them.
