Carlos Alcaraz got his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open on Sunday. After this spectacular victory, he is now enjoying the status of becoming the youngest man to ascend to the world’s number one ranking. Carlos Alcaraz becomes World’s No.1 player since his idol Nadal in 2005.
The Spanish tennis star, 19-year-old Carlos, dragged his exhausted body to a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-3 victory over Norway’s Casper Ruud in the final, which was a commendable match to witness. He stretched out his shoulders hard to play aggressively well. He handled the pressure of the situation, no one else can, in the fourth set to grab his 51st tour-level victory of the season. It was a combat of three hours and 20 minutes.
Alcaraz is now the youngest ever to claim the top ranking in Grand Slam men’s champion since his idol Rafael Nadal at the 2005 French Open. On a day of benchmarks, he is also the youngest champion in New York since Pete Sampras in 1990. The US Open is Alcaraz’s fifth trophy of 2022, after the Master’s triumphs in Rio, Barcelona, Miami, and Madrid.
After winning the tournament, full of emotions, Carlos dropped to the floor, enjoying his historic victory. He was elated receiving the roars of support from the New York crowd. Then Alcaraz climbed up to Rudd to embrace him, then his team, including coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Alcaraz won three successive five-set matches to finish up with his first Grand Slam final. He spent 20 hours and 19 minutes on court through six matches routing to the final. However, he showed little sign of tiredness to defeat Ruud.
“It is something I have dreamt of since I was a kid. To be No. 1 in the world, to be champion of a Grand Slam, is something I have worked really, really hard [for],” Alcaraz stated during the trophy ceremony.
But according to this youngest Grand Slam Champion, Alcaraz, “There is no time to be tired in the final rounds of a Grand Slam…You have to be ready and give everything you have inside. It is something I work really hard for,”
The journey to becoming the World’s No.1 started many years ago. Still, it indicated in Madrid that he declared himself as a thoughtful menace to the sport’s heavyweights when he turned out to be the first man to defeat Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal at the same claycourt event.
