I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting to write this today. Around midday, Japanese news sites started running the same headline: YouTuber Vambi, arrested in Roppongi.
Let me lay out what’s actually been reported, because the first hours of a story like this are always messy.
The short version
Vambi is Ryuki Shirai, 36. Police say they arrested him a little before 4 a.m. on October 1 at a Roppongi nightclub. The allegation is that he touched a woman in her twenties without her consent. Several outlets say he’d been drinking, and that officers arrived after a call came in and arrested him on the spot.
That’s the whole substance of it so far. Everything else you’ll see online is commentary, guesswork, or both.
About “red-handed”
English headlines love that phrase, so here’s what it means in practice. Japanese police can arrest someone at the scene (genkōhan taiho) without a warrant. It’s about timing and procedure. It doesn’t tell us anything about guilt, and it certainly isn’t a verdict.
What the agency said
Very little. Ota Production told several outlets it is “currently confirming the facts.” No apology, no denial.
It’s a cautious line, and honestly a sensible one at this stage. Agencies in Japan tend to say exactly this while they work out what happened, then follow up once they know more. I’d expect something longer soon, but that’s a guess on my part, not a report.
Why people are paying attention
Vambi isn’t a niche name:
- He made his name with Yun as the duo Vamyun. They passed two million subscribers, paused activity in late 2022, and announced their split in September 2023.
- His solo channel, launched in July 2022 as “Spider-Man” and now renamed Spider VAMBI, reached ten million subscribers. His agency says it was the fastest any Japanese YouTuber has managed.
- He also did radio and TV, including a late-night show on Nippon Broadcasting.
When someone with that reach is arrested, it travels fast.
What I’m watching
Mostly three things. First, whether prosecutors decide to charge him, since an arrest alone settles nothing. Second, whether Ota Production puts out a fuller statement. Third, whether sponsors or broadcasters change anything quietly in the coming days.
One last thing
Please don’t treat allegations as conclusions. He hasn’t been convicted, and he’s entitled to the presumption of innocence. The woman at the center of this is a private individual, and she deserves to be left out of the gossip cycle. If you’re tempted to share a rumor, wait for something official.
I’ll come back and update this post when there’s more.
