Which Country Eats the Most Avocados in the World?

The United States: the world’s biggest importer

The U.S. is the world’s largest avocado importer. Mexico supplied about 88% of total U.S. avocado imports in 2024. Some analyses call the U.S. the largest consuming country overall, noting that over 70% of American consumers see avocados as an exceptional source of nutrients. Year-round availability, changing diets, and the guacamole-and-game-day culture have all pushed demand up since the early 2000s.

Mexico: the home of the avocado

Other estimates put Mexico first in total consumption, with the U.S. in second place at roughly 1.2 million metric tons a year. That makes sense: Mexico is the world’s biggest producer and exporter, and avocados are deeply tied to its food culture. They also matter economically, as avocados are Mexico’s third-largest agricultural export by value, behind only beer and tequila.

Mexicans aren’t just exporting the fruit, either. Per capita consumption in Mexico reached nearly 12 kg per person in 2024, which is among the highest in the world.

Per person: the Dominican Republic

Per capita, one report claims the Dominican Republic is far ahead of everyone. It estimates the average Dominican eats about 134 grams of avocado a day, roughly 108 pounds a year. Per-capita figures vary a lot by source and method, and some datasets don’t include Dominican trade data at all, so treat this number as indicative rather than definitive. Even so, it is clear that avocados are an everyday food there.

Colombia and Latin America

Latin America as a whole is a major avocado market. Regional consumption doubled between 2010 and 2020, reaching almost 6 billion pounds. Colombia stands out in that data, with a per capita figure of about 34.7 pounds in 2020.

Europe: the fastest-growing fans

In Europe, France is the largest consumer by volume, followed by Germany and the UK. Per person, though, the Nordic countries lead, with Denmark at about 3 kg a year and Norway at about 2.8 kg, compared with 2.3 kg in France. That is far below Mexican levels, but it shows how quickly the fruit has caught on in Europe.

Why do people love avocados?

  • Taste and texture: Creamy, mild, and works in sweet and savory dishes.
  • Perceived health benefits: People value its healthy fats and nutrients.
  • Versatility: Toast, salads, dips, smoothies, even desserts.
  • Availability: Global supply chains now provide avocados all year.
