In 2011, while in school, Neeraj was introduced to javelin throwing during a sports training camp. Neeraj’s journey was not without its share of challenges. Hailing from a humble background, he faced financial constraints that could have deterred him from pursuing his passion. In 2021, he commenced his international season by securing a gold medal with a throw of 83.18 meters. This achievement marked the beginning of his journey on the global stage.[49] Following this victory, Chopra stayed in Lisbon until June 19th, after which he traveled to Uppsala, Sweden accompanied by his coach. This trip was for additional training, authorized by the Sports Authority of India, incurring a cost of ₹34.85 lakh.
Continuing his journey, in June 2022, he participated in the Karlstad Meet in Sweden, where he clinched a gold medal despite a throw slightly below his usual standards, reaching 80.96 meters. Subsequently, he secured a bronze medal at the Kuortane Games in Finland with an impressive throw of 86.79 meters. In this event, the 24-year-old managed to capture the gold with a throw of 86.69 meters in his first legitimate attempt. He explained his performance dip in Finland by citing issues with throwing height and the use of an unfamiliar javelin due to unavailability of his usual one.
Post Tokyo Olympics
During June 2022, at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, Chopra secured second place and established a new personal best of 89.30 meters, simultaneously setting a new national record. He surpassed his own national record with a remarkable throw of 89.94 meters at the Stockholm Diamond League, securing a second-place finish.
In July 2022, during the men’s javelin throw final at the Oregon World Championships, Chopra achieved a historic silver medal with a throw of 88.13 meters on his fourth attempt. This accomplishment marked India’s second medal at the World Athletics Championships, the first being a bronze won by long-jumper Anju Bobby George in 2003. On August 26, he emerged victorious at the Lausanne Diamond League, attaining a distance of 89.09 meters, thereby earning a spot in the Zürich Final. On September 8, he triumphed in the Final with a throw of 88.44 meters. This victory made him the first Indian to achieve such a feat and secured his qualification for the 2023 World Championships.
In May 2023, Chopra dominated the Doha Diamond League, securing the top position with an impressive throw of 88.67 meters. During the same month, he achieved a significant milestone by topping the men’s javelin throw rankings released by World Athletics, a first in his career.
His excellence continued in August 2023, as he clinched the gold medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships by achieving a throw of 88.17 meters.
