UK Prime Minister Liz Truss Resigns in Just Six Weeks- Who is Next!

Thursday morning, in a statement Liz Truss announced her intent to resign as the UK prime minister, only six weeks into her unrestrained term. Liz Truss resigns and her so-soon exodus from this prominent and most perceiving post makes her the shortest-serving U.K. PM in history.

Outside Downing Street, Truss said in a statement she is treading aside to make the selection of the contender for her replacement happen within the next week, following the swelling pressure from her own Conservative Party’s legislators. According to the reports, the party members have lost faith in her leadership capabilities.

In a brief statement, Truss said, “I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected,”. She also said she had informed King Charles III of her resignation and would remain in her position until a leadership election chooses her successor.

It has been witnessed that Truss’ tenure as UK PM marked many controversies and economic uncertainty while she was struggling to gain control after the departure of the former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson this summer.

However, her announcement triggers much trouble for the ruling Conservative Party.

Liz Truss’ efficiency as a leader and UK PM came into question after her former Treasury secretary Kwasi Kwarteng issued a mini-budget that featured proposals for vertical tax cuts that flung the British economy into disorder. The value of the UK pound dropped to a record fall against the U.S. dollar, which made Truss fire Kwarteng, as a result. Although the government put efforts to reverse her tax proposals. But the damage was already done till then.

Truss is the Most Deserving Next

Among all the speculations for the next PM contender, Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt are the most deserving from the previous leadership contest this year. They are supposed to be running in the race following UK PM Liz Truss’s resignation.
