Three games into the Roberto Montoya era, and Comunicaciones still can’t buy a win.
The Cremas hosted Guastatoya on September 18 at Cementos Progreso, needing badly to snap a five-match winless run. They left the pitch having stretched it to six, beaten 2-1 by a Guastatoya side that simply looked sharper in every phase of the game.
It’s not that Comunicaciones came in blind to the stakes. Montoya had talked up his players beforehand, saying the squad was starting to grasp his ideas, that the confidence from a draw at Cobán Imperial had loosened them up. Friday told a different story. What showed up was a team still hunting for shape disconnected in midfield, short on ideas going forward, and leaky enough at the back that Guastatoya’s José Almanza needed just two chances to punish them twice.

Montoya’s tenure so far reads: a loss to Marquense in his debut, a draw at Cobán, and now this. He left Omar Duarte on the bench to start and kept Agustín Vuletich out of the squad entirely decisions that will draw scrutiny given how the night played out.
Guastatoya, for what it’s worth, barely broke stride. They came into the match fourth in the table off the back of a win over Xelajú MC, and they leave it potentially third, depending on how San Pedro fare against Cobán Imperial this weekend. Almanza’s brace did the heavy lifting, but really it was a match Comunicaciones handed them more than one Guastatoya seized.
What Comes Next
There’s no hiding from where this leaves things. Comunicaciones are staring at the real possibility of finishing this round dead last, depending on how Suchitepéquez and Cobán get on elsewhere. The coaching change was supposed to be the reset button. Three games in, it hasn’t pressed anything.
Montoya will get more time three games is nothing in a season but patience in Guatemalan football has limits, and this result will test how much of it he’s got left.
