Russell Brand Has Been Convicted. Here’s Where Things Stand

On Thursday, a London jury found Russell Brand guilty of rape and sexual assault. The allegations go back more than 20 years. If you’ve followed this story since the first allegations surfaced in 2023, it still feels strange to type that sentence.

What the jury decided

The verdict wasn’t a clean sweep either way. Brand was convicted on one count of rape and three of sexual assault, covering four women. But jurors cleared him of two other rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault. Other reports say six women were involved in the case overall, so the jury clearly looked at each charge on its own rather than treating it as all or nothing. They took more than eight hours over two days to get there.

Prison, and soon

Brand had been out on bail during the trial. Not anymore. The judge, Joel Bennathan, had him taken into custody and warned that a “significant” prison term is coming when he’s sentenced on Monday.

How long might that be? The law allows a lot of room. Rape carries a maximum of life in prison, and sexual assault carries up to 10 years. Those are ceilings, not predictions. Sentencing guidelines will shape the final number, so we’ll know more on Monday.

The two sides of the courtroom

Prosecutors painted him as a calculating, manipulative predator. Brand told a very different story from the witness box. He admitted being sex-obsessed and promiscuous when he was younger, but insisted he never forced anyone.

His lawyers also leaned on timing. They pointed out that the women only went to police years after the alleged incidents, and after a 2023 documentary aired anonymous accusations against him. The jury heard that argument and still convicted on four counts.

Brand also said the case has swallowed his life. His wife, Laura, came to court with him and spoke up for him as a character witness.

What the police said

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Met praised the women for their courage in coming forward, and said Brand used his fame and status to exploit them.

How he got here

It’s worth remembering how big Brand once was. He broke through in the early 2000s on TV and BBC radio, then moved into Hollywood with films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. For a while he was married to Katy Perry. More recently he left mainstream media behind, moved to Florida and built a big online audience with a mix of wellness content, conspiracy theories and talk about his faith.

What I’m watching next

Monday’s sentence is the obvious one. After that, I’d keep an eye on whether Brand seeks to appeal, which defendants in England and Wales are entitled to try. Nothing has been reported on that yet.

Bigger picture, this case is another reminder of how long it can take for people to come forward when the accused is famous and powerful. Whatever you think of Brand, that part of the conversation isn’t going away.
