A small plane has crashed onto the A2 autobahn in eastern Germany. Two people on board didn’t survive.
It happened northeast of Magdeburg, near Burg and Krähenberge, shortly before 3pm. That’s a busy stretch of road at a busy time of day, which makes the details worth a closer look.
What we know so far
German outlet Bild quoted authorities saying the aircraft caught fire when it hit the ground. Rescue workers recovered two occupants, both already dead. The tail section was left lying on the carriageway, and pieces of wreckage ended up strewn along the embankment.
Here’s the one bit of good news: no cars on the road were reported damaged. Given the traffic, that feels almost lucky.
The plane
Flight-tracking site Flightradar pointed to an Aerostyle Breezer, a two-seat ultralight. That would fit with two people on board, though it’s worth treating the identification as preliminary.
What we don’t know
Quite a lot, actually. There’s no word yet on why the plane came down, and I haven’t seen the victims named. Weather, engine trouble and pilot error are the usual suspects in light-aircraft accidents, but nobody should guess until investigators say something concrete.
A closing thought
Small-plane accidents don’t happen often, and ones that land on a motorway are rarer still. This one cost two lives, and it could easily have cost more. My sympathies go to the families and friends of those on board.
