Some of the strongest earthquakes strikes South Carolina, Wednesday, 29 June 2022, with several aftershocks. More than 3500 people felt the quakes as reported to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The USGS reported some aftershocks as well till morning.
The first, a magnitude was 3.5 in South Carolina, was confirmed at around 2:45 p.m.
A second quake with a magnitude of 1.79 happened in the same area just after 1:45 a.m.
The third quake within the same area with a magnitude of 1.75, was reported around 1:53 a.m.
According to the USGS, the fourth quake was reported with a magnitude of 1.34 about 3.7 miles east southeast of Elgin at 4:45 a.m. following the next at 4:40 p.m. with a magnitude of 1.5.
A pair of aftershocks with magnitudes of 1.79 and 1.46, respectively – were also reported following the latest quake.
The USGS states that small-magnitude earthquakes are common in South Carolina. However, such a count of quakes occurring in such a short period is unusual.
“While other states, such as California, often draw more attention for having earthquakes, South Carolina experiences between 10 and 15 earthquakes a year”, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division claimed.
